Why Maelstrom?

Dr. Mike Raisor founded Maelstrom Advisory on a simple premise shaped by more than 30 years of working with and advising school districts:

We ask education leaders to run increasingly complex organizations without always giving them the tools to do it.

Traditional education leadership preparation provides a strong foundation in teaching, learning, and school leadership, but often gives far less attention to systems thinking, process improvement, operational excellence, and the practical disciplines of executive leadership.

Mike's career across education, business, district operations, national consulting, and the superintendency has reinforced a simple lesson: great people and good intentions aren't enough. Leaders need practical tools to understand how work gets done, remove unnecessary complexity, improve systems and processes, and turn strategy into execution.

Systems Optimization

Effectiveness, not efficiency, should be the goal in a school district. However, many districts struggle from systems that are in conflict with each other, impacting effectiveness. We teach leaders to see the systems and root causes that impact a district’s structure, operations and processes at a macro-level, they can design improvements and modifications to optimize the system as a whole.

Performance Improvement

Working with district leaders, we identify processes or practices that are not performing at optimal levels. We teach leaders to analyze the current state, identify root causes, and create improved, streamlined processes that save money and enhance the “customer experience” for students, staff, and the community.

Change Management

We have found that one of the major impediments to improvement and optimization is bandwidth. District leaders often feel too busy with their “day job” to take on one more thing. That’s where Maelstrom comes in. With expert training and experience in change management projects, we teach you to map and design improvement efforts to insure successful adoption and implementation, while creating a culture of continuous improvement where everyone sees finding a better way as a badge of honor.
